Autumn: K

K? That was it? My smile fell.

“Uh oh, trouble in paradise already?” Jesse mumbled, coming up behind me.

“Screw you.”

Ryan whistled. "Someone is sensitive tonight.”

My mother poked her head into the kitchen. "Dylan, can you help me with something in the living room?”

My mother had always had impeccable timing. It was like she could feel when one of her sons needed her, and she magically appeared. I followed her into the living room and she sat down in her spot on the corner of the old couch that she refused to get rid of. She had let her shoulder length hair go completely gray, and it suited her.

"What do you need, Ma?”

“Sit down, dear. Let’s chat.”

I sat in the armchair adjacent to her. “What’s up?” I asked, fully knowing what it was about.

“Tell me about her.”

I took a breath in, gathering my thoughts. “She’s incredible. Naturally beautiful, and I don’t think she even realizes it. Inside, too, not just physically. She’s witty, and she’s extremely intelligent. Plus, she’s got a serious career as a director at a property management firm. She just gets me.” I shrugged. “Frankly, I don’t think I’m good enough for her, but for some reason, she wants to date me.”

“Why would you say that? You’re smart, too, Dylan. And you’re ambitious. You started your own business when you were nineteen. It takes brains to be a fireman, too. Your father used to tell me about the calculations that you guys need to do.” Anytime she mentioned my father, sadness flashed in her eyes. They had been soulmates, and I knew his death had been much harder on her than she had let on.

“Every day, you have to make high-pressure decisions with life or death consequences. I’d say you need a good head on your shoulders in order to do that.” She put her hand on my arm before continuing. "You’re exceptionally handsome, and you have the kindest heart of anyone I know.”

“I think you’re a little biased, Ma.”

“A little bit, maybe, but that doesn’t make what I’m saying false. That woman is lucky to have you, Dylan. So don’t think you don’t deserve her.”

I couldn’t help the smile that escaped my lips. "Thanks, Mom.”

“I’m serious. Don’t talk yourself out of a good thing.”

I stared at her, processing what she had said. In every relationship I’d been in since Jenna’s death, I had always kept the woman at arm’s length. My mother had called me out on my self-sabotaging on multiple occasions.

She continued. "It's been a long time since I’ve heard you talk about someone so seriously. I can tell by the look in your eyes that this girl is special to you.”

I nodded. “She is.” I paused, afraid of the words I knew were coming next. "I think I’m really falling for her, Mom.”

My mother covered her heart with her hand and smiled. "I’m so happy for you.”

I sighed. "But I think I may have screwed things up.”

“Why do you say that?”

I told her about the
